In summer of 2016, HOPE announced it was looking for new location, as property owner Vick Ayad (who payed property taxes as well as for things such as security and trash removal over the years) decided it was finally time to redevelop the site. The sandy, overgrown lot and its remnants of demolition became a colorful, compelling, popular attraction for locals and visitors alike while keeping its ragged, anarchic qualities ultimately, it became one of the city’s bigger tourist attractions. The lot on Baylor Street, just west of North Lamar Boulevard, was developed in the 1980s and, according to a Wednesday KUT story, demolished in the 1990s after several lawsuits over structural deficiencies.Īfter receiving approval from the property owner, HOPE Gallery co-founder Andi Scull Cheatham led the effort to cultivate and maintain the 20th-century ruins as what was meant to be temporary a place for street artists and others to paint to their hearts’s desires. The beloved and well-known park and popular tourist attraction-a steep, stair-stepped lot full of concrete walls and wild vegetation-stayed put longer than anyone expected it to. HOPE Outdoor Gallery, the popular Castle Hill graffiti park that sprang up spontaneously in 2011 and remained open to all (artists and visitors alike) for seven years, closes today. Now, it is becoming a more and more popular element in interior design. But street art does not end up in the Big Apple, colourful South American cities or urban areas only. Nowadays, street art is considered a part of contemporary art. The controversial phenomenon started with colourful forms on sides of train cars and finally ended up in galleries where artists display their graffiti pieces. Where did street art come from? Already in ancient times, people searched for means of expressing themselves, but it is the diverse New York that is most known for the revolutionary art style.
